A Message from the Founder

The Future of Leadership Learning

One of the most interesting things to consider as
a leader preparing for the future is the future of
learning in leadership. There are many converging
factors identifying that leadership is going to be
more about learning than any other factor in the

Not so, in the future, leadership will be about

What I and others mean by this construct is that
the speed of change is increasing so rapidly, that
learning will lead everything. When we begin to
reconsider leadership and coaching--for that
matter anything that has anything to do with
business--we have to reconsider learning in the
context of leadership.

In our system, we call it CAPABILITY, yet whatever
you want to call it, learning is going to be the
driver of the future. In the piece I've enclosed
as a reference, I find it interesting to
reconsider the role of leadership in the context
of the six drivers of the future and everyone one
of them involves learning.

Not just learning, but learning to learn.

Futures Observatory)

Based upon the researches over the past five years
of the Open University's
'Futures Observatory' (jointly sponsored by the
Strategic Planning Society), the following have
emerged as the key forces shaping the future of
society over the next quarter of a century:

1. Individual Empowerment

2. Symbiosis with Computer

3. Ageing

4. LLL (Life-Long-Learning)

Much has been hyped in this area and little has
been achieved but practical developments will
ultimately appear;

CPD ('Continuing Professional Development') - at
one extreme, the emerging skills shortage will in
any case require extensive on-going re-education
(according to the EC of up to 90% of the working
population), especially of older and already
skilled staff, but this will be increasingly
focused on individual fulfillment.

U3A ('University of the Third Age') - at the other
extreme, the older cohorts - including those
approaching (and already in) retirement – will
take this individual focus to its logical extreme;
creating informal, socially based, 'clubs' for
their own further education; which will also
appeal to the younger (increasingly well-educated)

Generation Gap - over the next 25 years the
proportion of the older groups who have been
exposed to higher education (and hence may be more
open to the culture of LLL) will grow from less
than 10% to more than 30% (and that of the younger
groups may come exceed 60%); with significant
implications for the development of LLL.

I noted above, but the focus is clearly on
leadership and learning whether we like it or not,
we'll have to find ways in leadership to learn
faster, deeper and with an eye towards

Dr. Steven Reiss, developer of the Reiss Profile
will discuss the Sixteen enduring desires and
values make us individuals and determine our
personality.   Although everybody embraces all 16
basic desires, we differ in the extent to which we
value each one.  How we prioritize the 16 basic
desires is called a Reiss Profile. If you know an
individual’s Reiss Profile, you know what will and
what will not motivate the person, the
individual’s personality strengths and weaknesses,
the careers the person will find fulfilling, and
what is required for value-based happiness.  If
you know the Reiss Profile of any two people –
partners, supervisor and employee, parent  and
child – you can identify specific strengths and
weaknesses in the relationship.  Of 50 people
tested on both the Reiss Profile and Myers Briggs,
more than 90 percent liked seeing both results and
said the findings were compatible. The Reiss
Profile is backed by more than 25 peer-reviewed
scientific publications and is regarded by many
who have used it as a highly accurate assessment

Steven Reiss is Professor of Psychology and
Psychiatry at the Ohio State University.  A
graduate of Dartmouth College and a Yale
University Ph.D., Dr. Reiss has won three national
research awards.  He ranks in the upper one

with which other researchers have cited his work
in their peer-reviewed publications. Dr. Reiss is
