A Message from the Founder

Effective Executive = Effective Leader?
To begin, let's look at what Peter Drucker says
 about effective executives:

An effective executive does not need to be a
leader in the sense that the term is now most
commonly used. Harry Truman did not have one ounce
of charisma, for example, yet he was among the
most effective chief executives in U.S. history.
Similarly, some of the best business and nonprofit
CEOs I've worked with over a sixty-five-year
consulting career were not stereotypical leaders.
They were all over the map in terms of their
personalities, attitudes, values, strengths, and
weaknesses. They ranged from extroverted to nearly
reclusive, from easygoing to controlling, from
generous to parsimonious.

What made them all effective is that they followed
the same eight practices:

They asked, "What needs to be done?"
They asked, "What is right for the enterprise?"
They developed action plans.
They took responsibility for decisions.
They took responsibility for communicating.
They were focused on opportunities rather than
They ran productive meetings.
They thought and said "we" rather than "I."

The first two practices gave them the knowledge
they needed. The next four helped them convert
this knowledge into effective action. The last two
ensured that the whole organization felt
responsible and accountable. [.]

In my view, while this is directed to the identity
of an executive, there are some real keys here for
leadership effectiveness. Yet, these as Drucker
I'm sure admits are not enough for effective

In my own search for leadership which began with a
life-changing event back in 1987, I began to read
and research everything I could find about
leadership. I had always been in a leadership

Essentially I discovered that was due more to my
unconscious striving than to any real choice I was
making and that brings me to a point I'd like to
make about effective leadership.

Effective Leadership won't always be a conscious
choice--it will emerge.

At times, under certain conditions, leaders emerge
and become effective. The real question is what
makes leaders effective over time. While this
might be the most researched, written about and
discussed debate in existence, I'd like to state
my opinion.

Read that No Thing.

In other words, there isn't any one thing that
makes a leader effective over time. It's always a
combination of things that makes up effective
leadership and more likely than not, and this is
written about by few people, it's the situation
that makes the leader.

Dr. Clare W. Graves research, which is relatively
obscure and can be accessed through indicated that "conditions"
were responsible for triggering the
biopyschosocial systems in people which were in
response to these conditions. Until the conditions
emerged, the system to meet the tension produced
through this emergence remained, or returned to
dormancy. It is some fascinating research in which
to play.

Out of this comes my realization that you can try
to create a leadership system and then address the
conditions, or you can look into the conditions
for leadership. In one case, you're stuck with the
leadership system, in the other case leadership
comes to you.

Over the next few months I'll write about my
experience in leadership coming to us and try to
show you the map we use to create effective
leadership that emerges just in time and how to
prepare efficiently to create this more
sustainable form of leadership growth.
